Pull your PDF back out into an editable or shareable format.

A PDF describes how a page should be painted. Underneath, it does not contain headings and paragraphs and table cells — it contains instructions for putting glyphs at coordinates. That asymmetry is why writing a PDF is easy and reading one back is not, and why any converter promising a flawless round trip is overselling.

These tools are built around what is genuinely recoverable. Page images come out exact, because rendering is the one thing a PDF is designed for. Text comes out reliably. Structure — tables, columns, styles — comes out as well as the original file's internal layout allows, which is excellent for a PDF exported from Word and rough for one produced by a scanner.

Why is my converted Word file not identical?

Because the structure was discarded when the PDF was made. The converter rebuilds headings, paragraphs and tables by reading positions on the page, which works well on a cleanly exported document and less well on a complex layout. Expect to fix a few things rather than nothing.

What about scanned PDFs?

A scan is a picture of a page, so there is no text inside it to extract and these tools will hand back an empty document. Run it through OCR first — that recognises the characters and adds a real text layer, after which converting behaves normally.

Which format should I pick?

Pick by what you intend to do next. Editing means Word. Numbers mean Excel. Putting a page into a slide or a message means JPG or PNG. If you only need the words and nothing else, plain text is the format least likely to arrive mangled.
