A PDF that will not send is almost always a PDF full of images. A ten-page document has no business being forty megabytes, and when it is, the cause is a phone camera or a scanner writing every page at print resolution into a file that will only ever be read on a screen.

Compression targets exactly that, and the honest framing is that it is a trade rather than a free win — you choose how much image detail to give up for how much size. Beside it sit the two other things that go wrong with a PDF: one a viewer refuses to open at all, and one whose pages are pictures where they ought to be text.

How much smaller will my PDF get?

It depends entirely on what is inside it. Image-heavy scans routinely drop by 70–90% with no visible change on screen. A text-only document is already efficient and may barely move — if a file is 200 KB, there is nothing in there to remove.

Will compressing blur my text?

No. Text in a PDF is stored as font instructions rather than pixels, and compression does not touch it — it re-encodes the images. The exception is a scanned document, where what looks like text is part of the image and softens along with it.

What does OCR actually change?

It leaves the scan looking identical and adds an invisible text layer beneath it. After that the document is searchable, its text can be selected and copied, and converting it to Word or plain text starts working. The page you see does not change at all.
